As your Council Member, I have

 

  • Successfully led in working with our police chief, community leaders and residents in transitioning Oceanside Police Department into a community policing model, reflective of the city’s diversity, with required training and counseling to address disparate treatment and equality issues, resulting in significantly fewer lawsuits
  • Successfully lobbied on behalf of our LGBTQ community, including for the North County LGBTQ Resource Center, and created change at city hall resulting in a Human Rights Campaign Equality Index rating of 100% and proclamations honoring our LGBTQ families and individuals
  • Successfully lobbied for after-school programs to proactively address and encourage at-risk youth
  • Lobbied on behalf of the Eastside Neighborhood, Crown Heights Neighborhood, and John Landes, Libby Lake and back gate communities for investments and community development and served as a liaison for the Latino, Samoan and LGBTQ communities
  • Improved public safety response times. Oceanside’s crime rate is one of the lowest in 35 years
  • Successfully lobbied for Fire Stations 7 and 8
  • Lobbied for additional recreational opportunities, including Mance Buchannon, Luiseño and El Corazon parks, skate parks, 22 soccer fields and we are under construction for an aquatics center at El Corazon
  • Championed El Corazon Park, Senior Center and Aquatics Center
  • Championed the expansion of the Oceanside Museum of Art
  • Saved The Goat (aka Goat Hill)
  • Championed a permanent home for the California Surf Museum
  • Successfully lobbied for the only zero waste resolution in the county and negotiated a waste hauler contract generating $26 million in revenues for the city
  • Promoted tourism, especially agri-tourism
  • brought Google to Oceanside, making Oceanside the first Google Indoor Maps city on the west coast
  • Promoted bike trails and Oceanside’s designation as a bicycle-friendly city
  • Addressed traffic issues with traffic calming, preferential parking programs, and synchronized traffic lights
  • Successfully fought to keep our Oceanside Public Libraries, municipal swimming pools and parks from being privatized
  • Led in the creation of over 1,000 affordable housing units, including the construction of Lil Jackson Senior Community, La Mision and Mission Cove
  • Successfully fought to protect our city’s mobile home rent control ordinance and successfully led the referendum against termination of rent control, protecting seniors and veterans
  • Successfully fought on behalf of senior homeowners at Costa Serena against the threat of losing the community’s senior status, including providing legal representation
  • Approved Oceanside’s Veteran’s Center and VA Clinic
  • Successfully lobbied for regional sand replenishment projects I and II, placing sand on our beaches
  • Successfully lobbied SANDAG to complete the EIR for the Buena Vista Lagoon improvements project, leading to the recent adoption of the primarily saltwater alternative
  • Lobbied for improvements to the Oceanside Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center
  • Successfully lobbied for the adoption of a Climate Action Plan
  • Led in the development of a plan for Community Choice Energy Joint Powers Authority
  • Led in the adoption of a water conservation plan
  • Served as President of the Noche Mexicana Committee, bringing together the city’s Latino community in celebration of its history, art, music and food via the Annual Noche Mexicana/Mexican Independence Celebration for 15 years
  • Led in park improvements at Joe Balderrama Park, including rededication of the park in November 2019
  • Resolved issues at the neighborhood level, protecting neighborhoods and providing access to services

I have served on SANDAG, SANDAG Shoreline Preservation Working Group, SANDAG Energy Working Group, the California Coastal Commission, and as Deputy Mayor for 7 years.
